U.S. Consulate General Basrah Congratulates Basrawi Recipient of the 2012 - Women in Science Hall of Fame Award

On Wednesday, March 7, Consul General Piper Campbell of the U.S. Consulate General Basrah honored Dr. Nadia Al-Mudaffar Fawzi, Head of Research and Development, Marine Science Centre, University of Basrah, in recognition for her induction into the “Women in Science Hall of Fame – 2012.” The Middle East and North Africa Environment, Science, Technology, and Health Office initiated a “Women in Science Hall of Fame” to honor outstanding female scientists throughout the region.  Each year a dozen women are selected for their accomplishments in order to inspire girls to study science and pursue scientific careers.

 

Dr. Nadia also was acknowledged by her current employer, the University of Basrah for this award. Over the last twenty years, Dr. Nadia has worked on projects with international organizations including UNESCO, UNICEF, and the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. Dr. Nadia is co-drafting Iraq’s biodiversity strategy, and is versed in environmental restoration, management, and community awareness, with a focus on the Iraqi marshlands.
